Applewares, the Park Slope kitchen supply store opened by the team behind the nearby Applewood restaurant, is now selling a sampling of the food items served at the eatery.
Owners David and Laura Shea are offering such dainties as espresso chocolate chip cookies ($4.50), vanilla shortbread cookies ($4), and candied macadamia nuts ($8); small jars of pickled ramps ($12) and garlic confit ($5) are also on the shelves. Eventually, the duo intends to offer more savory items, including duck rillettes and duck liver pâté, charcuterie, garlic cream cheese spread, and French butter, and additional sweets, such as chocolate truffles. Shoppers looking for certain items should call in advance to make sure desirables are in stock: Duck fat, for instance, is used at the restaurant, but jars of it might not be at Applewares on a given day.
The Sheas opened Applewares late last summer, as a way for devoted customers to purchase some of the high-quality kitchenware used at the restaurant, including towels, glassware, copper- or cast-iron-enameled pots, and general items such as locally produced pottery.
The sweet snacks now in stock at Applewares are the same treats served to Applewood customers at the conclusion of a meal. Small enough for a one-bite break, the espresso cookie is crunchy and airy, while the vanilla shortbread has a dense, buttery crumb.
And the pickled ramps maintain the oniony strength of fresh specimens, but the garlic overtones aren’t as strong, making these crunchy vegetables suitable as a chopped topping on pastas or salads.
