Boxes of chocolates are ubiquitous on Valentine’s Day, but the cellophane-wrapped candies found at the local pharmacy don’t compare to the downtown confections Tribeca Treats offers. The candy store and bakery, founded by a former caterer, Rachel Thebault, is offering a Valentine’s Day special of pink peppercorn chocolate filled with ganache that’s been infused with the spice. Pink peppercorns are actually berries, and carry a mild pepper flavor with just a little spice at the back of the tongue. The chocolates are topped with three candied peppercorns that pack a sweet-and-spicy crunch. Along with the special Valentine’s chocolates, Tribeca Treats offers a large variety of other flavors, including “Bleeding Orange,” flavored with blood orange juice, and “Fleur de Sel,” a caramel-filled chocolate seasoned and topped with sea salt. This condensed version of a chocolate-and-salt sandwich is mouthwatering and satisfying, a combination made in food heaven. Tribeca Treats sells the chocolates individually or in boxed sets. A “Just Friends” box set, for those without a Valentine, includes truffles, cookies, brownies, and chocolate-covered pretzels.
Each chocolate is $1.25; a 16-piece box of chocolates is $35, and a 25-piece set is $45. The “Just Friends” box is $35 (94 Reade St., between West Broadway and Church Street, 212-571-0500).
