SNACK ATTACK If for some reason a latenight snack of a gyro or fries doesn’t strike your fancy, stop by Heirloom (191 Orchard St., between Houston and Stanton streets, 212-228-9888), which has added a late night bar menu to its vegetarian repertoire. The menu includes grilled portobello sliders with blue cheese and fries ($10); cheesy nachos with guacamole salsa, refried beans, and pickled jalapenos ($8); buffalo tofu on sugar cane sticks with house vegan ranch dressing or blue cheese dip, pickled carrots, and celery ($10); deep-fried oyster mushrooms with basil and red chilies ($8), and grilled edamame with garlic oil and fresh herbs ($6). Most of the dishes can be made vegan, except the cheese plate ($10).
HELLO OPERATOR Butterfield 8 (5 E. 38th St., between Fifth and Madison avenues, 212-679-0640) opens today. In the tradition of the now-shuttered Judson Grill, Butterfield 8 is named after a telephone exchange (though it’s an Elizabeth Taylor movie, too). This bar and restaurant is dishing up high-end comfort food such as cheese steaks made with prime rib on ciabatta ($11.95),and a grilled cheese and prosciutto sandwich with mozzarella, American, and Muenster cheeses ($8.95). The burger is made with certified black angus beef with a choice of two toppings ($10.95) such as mushrooms, sauteed onions, apple-smoked bacon, and cheddar, American, horseradish cheddar, mozzarella, Muenster, or Swiss cheeses.
NEW SWEETS Rosa Mexicano (61 W 62nd St., between Broadway and Columbus Avenue, 212-977-7700, and other locations) has a new corporate pastry chef to oversee desserts at its locations in New York, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C. Previously the executive pastry chef of Union Pacific, Nancy Kershner most recently was in D.C., where she was executive pastry chef of a Viennese pastry shop called Cafe Leopold, and Konditeroi restaurant. Among the new desserts she’s adding is a chocolate-passion fruit souffle cake with sweet tomatillo dipping sauce, and a sundae of cinnamon-spiked Mexican chocolate, peanut crunch, and raspberry ice cream topped with roasted pineapples, plantains, and whipped cream. The sundae comes with three sauces:spiced blackberry, bittersweet chocolate, and caramel sauce.
RAISE A GLASS Congress gave up on prohibition 73 years ago as of this Monday. In celebration of the proposal of the 21st Amendment, which repealed the 18th Amendment, the Campbell Apartment in Grand Central Terminal 15 Vanderbilt Ave. at 43rd Street, 212-953-0409) is offering its Prohibition Punch at the Prohibition price of $5, instead of the usual $15. The cocktail is made with passion fruit juice, Hennessey XO cognac, Grand Marnier, and Moet & Chandon champagne. The special price is being offered only this Monday, from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m.
CHEF CHANGE Kosher steakhouse La Carne Grill (340 Lexington Ave., between 39th and 40th streets, 212-490-7172) has a new executive chef, Maurice Hurley, who previously was at Cassis on Stone downtown.
