For the first time in history, more American women are single than married, according to a recent analysis of Census date. But Valentine’s Day continues to be one of the most popular nights of the year for dining out. Visit your favorite restaurant’s Web site to see what it has in store for you. Most of them will have limited, fixedprice menus and preset seating times as they attempt to deal with the many customers who are trying to impress their honeys. But there are other options.
These restaurants are offering their full menus: davidburke & donatella (133 E. 61st St., between Park and Lexington avenues, 212-813-2121); Gavroche (212 W. 14th St., near Seventh Avenue, 212-647-8553), with live music by the French Connection from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.; The Mermaid Inn (96 Second Ave., between 5th and 6th streets, 212-674-5870); Nish (formerly known as March, 405 E. 58th St. at First Avenue, 212-754-6272); The Stanton Social (99 Stanton St., between Ludlow and Orchard streets, 212-995-0099); Tamarind (41-43 E. 22nd St., between Park Avenue South and Broadway, 212-674-7400).
Cronkite Pizzeria & Wine Bar (133 Norfolk St. at Rivington Street, 212-375-1500) is offering its pizzas in the shape of a heart.
If you want a prix-fixe meal, but with folk music, Café Carlyle at the Carlyle hotel (35 E. 76th St. at Madison Ave., 212-744-1600) is serving a fourcourse tasting menu and a performance by folk singer Judy Collins. Dinner starts at 7, the show starts at 8:45, and the price is $220 a person.
Colors (417 Lafayette St., between 4th and Astor Place, 212-777-8443) is offering two dinners just for someone who wants to propose marriage. The Simple Elegance package includes a three-course menu, plus a surprise dessert not on the menu that is appropriate for hiding a ring. The price is $200, but that includes a $100 gift certificate toward a wedding rehearsal dinner at Colors.
The Night to Remember package includes a private room with a violinist, champagne, that surprise dessert for the ring, a photographer, and a free dinner for the couple’s first wedding anniversary.
A really serious wooer can book the Glass Pavilion at the top floor of the Time Hotel (224 W. 49th St. between Broadway and Eighth Avenue, 212-333-7749). There a private chef will cook a three-course meal, and a butler will see to other needs. The price for this Be Mine package is $1,000. That includes a panoramic view of the city, a bottle of champagne, and roses, but not tax or gratuity. The room can be booked at 6 p.m. or 9 p.m. for two hours.
Meanwhile, on the hotel’s second floor, Time Lounge will be throwing an “Anti-Vday” party from 6 p.m. until midnight.
