Chinese authorities released Hong Kong-based reporter Ching Cheong, who had been detained since April 2005 on spying charges.

Mr. Ching, the chief China correspondent for Singapore’s Straits Times newspaper, was released yesterday, a spokeswoman for the Hong Kong Chief Executive’s Office, Jacqueline Cheuk, said.

Beijing hosts the Olympic Games this year and China is trying to improve its global image on human rights and freedom of expression. Mr. Ching, 58, was sentenced to five years in jail in August 2006 on charges he was spying for Taiwan. China views Taiwan as part of its territory.
