No Word on Soldier Missing in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq — The U.S. military carried out house-to-house searches in an upscale Baghdad neighborhood for an Army translator missing after reportedly being kidnapped, but said yesterday they had found no sign of him. The military said the soldier, who was not identified by name, was last seen Monday in the heavily guarded Green Zone in central Baghdad, after which he was believed to have left to visit relatives elsewhere in the capital.

Kidnapped Photographer Freed Unharmed in Gaza

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — An Associated Press photographer was freed unharmed yesterday after a harrowing day in the hands of Palestinian Arabs who abducted him at gunpoint and dressed him in women’s clothes to spirit him from one secret location to another. Emilio Morenatti was brought before midnight to the office of the Palestinian Arab leader, Mahmoud Abbas, by Fatah officials. It was not clear who kidnapped him, though officials said he was taken by criminals.

Terrorism Suspect Wins Partial Victory in Canada

TORONTO — The first person charged under Canada’s anti-terrorism act won a partial victory yesterday when a judge struck down a key portion of the law, ruling that the clause dealing with the definition of the law violates the country’s bill of rights. Terror suspect Mohammed Momin Khawaja, a 27-year-old software developer, is accused of participating in and giving assistance to an alleged terror ring based in Britain.

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Two Islamic militants jailed for the Bali bombings that killed 202 people were freed yesterday, and nine others had their sentences reduced to mark the end of the Islamic fasting month.
