BAGHDAD (AP) – Four American soldiers were killed in an explosion near their vehicle in volatile Diyala province, the American military said Sunday.
The soldiers, all assigned to Task Force Lightning, died Saturday, the military said in a statement.
Another soldier was also wounded in the attack, and evacuated to an American military hospital, it said.
The victims’ names were withheld pending family notification.
Diyala lies northeast of Baghdad, and has seen a spike in attacks on American and Iraqi forces since an increased push to pacify the Iraqi capital began two months ago.
At least 3,274 members of the American military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes seven military civilians.
