London police arrested a man carrying two backpacks on the northern runway of Heathrow and carried out a controlled explosion on one of the bags.
“Airport police swiftly apprehended a man near the northern runway of Heathrow,” the operator of Europe’s busiest airport, BAA Ltd., said in an e-mailed statement. Police arrested the man at about 2 p.m. inside the airport perimeter.
“We carried out a controlled explosion on one bag at 3:20 p.m.,” a Metropolitan police spokesman said today by telephone, reading from a statement. No explosive device was found, the spokesman said. A second bag was also recovered by police, who initially said there was one backpack. The detainee ran into an aircraft’s path, the British Broadcasting Corp. said.
“The incident ended at about 3:50 p.m., when the northern runway came back into full use,” BAA said.
