RUSUTSU, Japan — President Sarkozy’s office says he will attend the opening of the Beijing Olympics, putting an end to a boycott threat.

Mr. Sarkozy’s office says the president stressed “the Olympic values of peace, friendship, and brotherhood” during talks Wednesday with President Hu of China on the sidelines of the Group of Eight summit of industrialized powers in Japan.

Mr. Sarkozy’s office said he “confirmed his intention” to attend the August 8 ceremonies.

The French president had left open the possibility of staying away from the ceremonies to take a stand against China’s crackdown on Tibet after riots and protests there in March.
