A newspaper editor in the Yemen has been fined $2,400 for denigrating Islam by reprinting cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad first published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten last year, the BBC reported. His lawyer dismissed the verdict as inappropriate. “The guilty verdict in this case is what harms the image of Islam,” he said.

Muhammad Assadi of the Yemen Observer is the second editor in a month to be fined for publishing the cartoons.

Last month, Kamal al-Aalafi was sentenced to prison for republishing the cartoons in the weekly al-Rai al-Aam, which was ordered closed for six months. A third editor awaits trial on the same charges.

President Saleh of Yemen has said he will overturn jail sentences handed to journalists.
