GOP Tries to Pump Up the Vote Even as Democrats Take to Florida Highways

If you’ve stopped for gas in the Rochester area recently, there’s a good chance that the state’s GOP tried to register you to vote.That’s because Republicans trying to get out the vote in New York’s 25th district have taken to recruiting voters at the pump.They aren’t alone in taking to the highways to sway voters: New York City’s Democratic leadership is using billboards in an attempt to recruit some Floridians to move north.Republicans are turning to the unusual recruiting method as they aim to rebound after Representative Joseph Morelle took the Flower City district by nearly 20 points in 2020.This year’s Republican congressional candidate for New York’s 25th, L’Ron Singletary, is confident he can deliver a different result. He and the state’s GOP chairman, Nick Langworthy, recently used an appearance at a Rochester gas station to criticize the country’s Democratic president.“Today we’re calling on President Biden to unshackle American energy,” Mr. Singletary said over the roar of passing cars. Added Mr. Langworthy: “We are standing here at the epicenter of Joe Biden’s agenda. High gas prices are the direct result of Joe Biden and the Democrat’s radical energy agenda. This is a real-life example of how the government affects our lives.”They directed responsibility for high gas prices at the president, pointing toward his cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline and an executive order aimed at “Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad.”“These people are so wildly out of touch with the average person,” Mr Langworthy continued. “They think everyone is sitting around at home dreaming of a Green New Deal.”It’s not yet clear, though, if enough voters will buy the “Biden Gas Hike” narrative to swing the vote come November. A Yahoo News/YouGov poll from mid-March found 33 percent of Americans blamed Mr. Biden, 22 percent blamed oil and gas companies, and 17 percent blamed Russia.Apparently, the Republicans are not the only ones who feel the road to victory starts on the road. Mayor Adams yesterday announced the launch of a billboard campaign with “a message for Florida’s LGBTQ+ community — come to a city where you can say and be whoever you want.”In a prepared statement, he said: “Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill is the latest shameful, extremist culture war targeting the LGBTQ+ community. Today, we say to the families living in fear of this state-sponsored discrimination that you will always have a home in New York City.” The digital billboard campaign “reaffirmation” of the mayor’s “commitment and unconditional support for the LGBTQ+ community” and a doubling down on New York City’s “commitment to preserving the right to free speech and building a city that welcomes everyone,” the statement said.The brightly colored billboards encourage Floridians to make a northward migration to New York City.One reads, “Come to the city where you can say whatever you want”; another says, “People say a lot of ridiculous things in New York. ‘Don’t say gay’ isn’t one of them.” All are tagged “NYC♡U.”They are referring to legislation passed recently in Florida that is probably best known by a nickname floated by critics, the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.Governor DeSantis has publicly defended the bill insisting, “It’s basically saying for our younger students, do you really want them being taught about sex? And this is any sexual stuff.”He added: “When you actually look at the bill and it says ‘no sexual instruction to kids pre-K through three,’ how many parents want their kids to have transgenderism or something injected into classroom instruction?”
