When one hears the word “design,” one tends to think of the Danes, or the Scandinavians, or the Italians. The Conran Shop is hoping to draw attention to another increasingly strong national design presence with its upcoming exhibit “British Influence,” featuring some of the Britain’s preeminent furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, tableware, and home-accessories designers. The exhibit, curated by Max Fraser, is timed to coincide with New York’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair, beginning May 13. Featured works include furniture and lighting by Ilse Crawford, Jasper Morrison’s kitchen wares, lights by Tom Dixon, and even James Dyson’s new DC15 “The Ball” vacuum cleaner for Dyson. The exhibit will also highlight the work of young, up-and-coming designers and design firms such as Barber Osgerby, Hannah Dipper, and Timorous Beasties. Two custom Mini automobiles, sporting mosaic designs by Bisazza, will also be displayed at the store.
