WASHINGTON — A professor of business and government policy at Syracuse University has been tapped to lead the American Enterprise Institute. The Washington-based think tank announced yesterday that it had named Arthur Brooks as its next president. Mr. Brooks, a visiting scholar at the institute who has contributed articles to the op-ed page of The New York Sun, will replace Christopher DeMuth, who had led the organization since 1986 but announced last October that he was stepping down. Mr. Brooks will take over in January, the institute said. The chairman of AEI’s board of trustees, Bruce Kovner, said the selection of Mr. Brooks followed a “thorough, intense, and wide-ranging” search. “The trustees were both unanimous and highly enthusiastic in deciding that Arthur Brooks — by dint of his intellect, accomplishments, character, and devotion to AEI’s work and purposes — is the best possible person to lead AEI in the critical years ahead,” Mr. Kovner, who is an investor in The New York Sun, said in a statement. Born in 1964 in Spokane, Wash., Mr. Brooks spent 12 years as a professional musician, playing the French horn, before turning to academia. He earned a doctorate in economics and policy analysis from the Frederick S. Pardee RAND Graduate School in 1998. He is the author of seven books and later this year will complete his eighth, “The Virtue of Vice: Why Bad Things Are Good for Us.”
