A conservative watchdog group, Judicial Watch, is planning to file a complaint with the Federal Election Commission over a climate change-related television ad starring the speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, and a former speaker, Newt Gingrich, the group’s president, Thomas Fitton, said yesterday.
Earlier this month, The New York Sun reported that the ad, paid for by a group founded by Vice President Gore, the Alliance for Climate Protection, may have run afoul of a federal law that deems such ads to be in-kind contributions to a candidate if run in the 90 days before a congressional election. The ad began airing on April 17 and was dropped at about the time of the Sun report.
“We believe the FEC needs to take a look at this, especially if it involves potential lawbreaking by the speaker of the House,” Mr. Fitton said.
Ms. Pelosi is on the ballot in the Democratic primary in San Francisco on June 3. A spokesman for the speaker said she assumed Mr. Gore’s team had attended to the legalities. A spokesman for the group said it was confident the ad was legal.
