KAINE SAYS HE ISN’T CAMPAIGNING FOR VICE PRESIDENCY

Governor Kaine of Virginia says he isn’t campaigning for the vice presidency, despite a pair of reports this week that he is in “very serious” talks with Senator Obama about joining the Democratic ticket. “I haven’t sought it. I’m not running for it. I’m not asking for it. I’ve never asked anything of the campaign,” the first-term governor told reporters in Washington yesterday after making a regular radio appearance. An early backer of Mr. Obama, Mr. Kaine has scant foreign policy experience but could help the Illinois senator carry Virginia, which he has been targeting aggressively.

BIOPSY SHOWS NO SKIN CANCER FOR McCAIN

A biopsy performed on Senator McCain showed no sign of skin cancer, the Mayo Clinic in Arizona said last night. The procedure was performed as a precaution after the Arizona senator had a piece of mole-like skin removed from his face during a medical exam Sunday. Mr. McCain is a three-time survivor of melanoma and has dermatological checkups every three months. The clinic released a statement last night on the biopsy results and said no further treatment was necessary.

OBAMA MEETS WITH PAKISTANI LEADER, DEMOCRATIC LAWMAKERS ON CAPITOL HILL

Senator Obama took a break from the campaign trail yesterday to tend to business on Capitol Hill, holding meetings with the prime minister of Pakistan and Democratic House members. He also talked by phone with Treasury Secretary Paulson and reportedly met for the second straight day with the advisers running his vice presidential search, signaling that the vetting of potential candidates has kicked into high gear. The presumptive Democratic nominee is scheduled to resume campaign activity today with a series of events in Missouri, a key battleground state.
