For the second time in a week, parts of the Upper East Side were stricken by power outages yesterday.
The power started going out at about 12 p.m. in an area centered on 78th Street and York Avenue, a spokesman for Consolidated Edison, Bob McGee, said. The blackout spread just west of 1st Avenue and uptown to 79th street, he said.
Con Ed officials estimated that 891 customers had lost power.
Con Ed technicians worked to repair electrical cables that were damaged by a manhole fire ignited early yesterday morning, and officials said they hoped to turn the lights back on by 10 p.m.
The manhole fire was ignited at about 4:30 a.m. on the corner of 79th Street and 1st Avenue, prompting the blackout, officials said.
Technicians were investigating damaged cables in the vicinity of the manhole fire to find which ones would need to be repaired or replaced, Mr. McGee said. Con Ed also set up a back-up generator for affected residences, he said.
