A city police officer pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges yesterday in a Manhattan federal court.

Jose Torrado, 31, who was an officer in the New York City Police Department’s Transit Bureau between 2001 and 2006, helped his brother pick-up and distribute cocaine and marijuana in the Bronx between 2002 and 2005, the United States District Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York said.

Torrado was arrested in September 2005 after law enforcement officials seized 135 kilograms of cocaine in the Bronx, the district attorney’s office said.

An investigation uncovered that Torrado was involved in an extensive drug trafficking network that smuggled drugs from Mexico into the city.

If convicted, Torrado faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, the district attorney’s office said.
