ALBANY — Rep. Michael McNulty, a Democrat, says he’s retiring after nearly 20 years of representing a seven-county area of eastern New York.
The 60-year-old Mr. McNulty denies rumors that his health is forcing him to step down after 10 terms as representative for the 21st Congressional District, which includes the heavily Democratic Albany-Schenectady-Troy region. He says his health is fine but acknowledges that affects of the polio he suffered as a child have reduced his stamina and mobility in recent years.
Mr. McNulty is part of a revered local political family. He joined the state Assembly in 1982 and was elected to Congress in 1988.
He currently serves as chairman of a subcommittee of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee and is one of the Democrats opposed to the war in Iraq.
