A veteran city official at the Department of Correction was arrested early yesterday morning for punching a man and breaking a glass door at Chelsea bar, police officials said.
Marc Carpentier, assistant commissioner of financial management and budget administration at the Department of Correction, allegedly struck an unidentified 29-year-old man at about 2:15 a.m. inside a gay bar at 232 Eighth Ave., the View Bar.
Mr. Carpentier, who according to a law enforcement source had been drinking alcohol and was very intoxicated, then proceeded to kick and break a glass door on his way out of the establishment, police said.
When police arrived on the scene, Mr. Carpentier proceeded to scuffle with several officers as they attempted to arrest him, police said.
Police are charging him with assault, resisting arrest, and criminal mischief.
Mr. Carpentier, who has worked at the corrections department since 1990, was suspended indefinitely without pay, a spokesman for the department, Stephen Morello, said.
Mr. Carpentier’s arrest is being processed Friday. A spokeswoman for the Manhattan district attorney’s office said it is unclear when Mr. Carpentier will face a judge for his arraignment.
