Three of the leading Democrats aiming to replace Mayor Bloomberg in 2009 are busy building their campaign war chests.

Rep. Anthony Weiner led his opponents in fund-raising over the past six months, pulling in $1.61 million with the help of 164 contributions of $4,950, the maximum allowed for citywide office seekers. Among his biggest donors, 12 listed real estate as their occupation and 21 said they are homemakers. Mr. Wiener has raised a total of $3.6 million.

The city’s Campaign Finance Board released financial filings from candidates yesterday.

The speaker of the City Council, Christine Quinn, pulled in $1.1 million during the last fund-raising stretch, for a total haul of $2.47 million. Among the 87 contributors who gave $4,950 in the last six months, 14 said they work in real estate and three listed their occupation as developers. Fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg gave her $4,950.

Ms. Quinn, who recently backed a rezoning plan to allow Columbia University to expand its campus in Harlem, received donations from four professors and a doctor at the university during the most recent fund-raising stretch.

Mr. Weiner received only one donation in the past six months from an employee of Columbia and another candidate, Comptroller William Thompson Jr., pulled in two donations from Columbia employees.

Mr. Thompson raised $1.05 million for a total of $4.2 million, the most raised by any candidate seeking public office in the city.

Since mid-July, he has collected $4,950 donations from 70 people, including seven attorneys and the president of an asset management firm, Azimuth Holdings; the president of an investment firm, Entrust Capital, and the president and CEO of a private equity firm, Leeds Equity Partners. He has received donations from 15 unions, which gave a total of $25,600, with five donations made in the last six months. Ms. Quinn has collected $9,500 from five unions, and Mr. Weiner has collected a single, $1,000 donation from a union.
