A fire department lieutenant has died after responding to a large blaze in a Brooklyn apartment building last night.

The lieutenant, John Martinson, 40, of Engine 249, was among at least 100 firefighters who responded to the fire in a 25-story apartment building in the Prospect-Lefferts Gardens section of Brooklyn.

The fire began on the 14th floor of a building at 1700 Bedford Ave. just after 7 p.m., and the fire department announced Martinson’s death three hours later.

He died of unknown injuries after being taken to Kings County Hospital.

Martinson was a resident of Staten Island and had been a firefighter for 14 years. He had worked for the city for a total of 18 years.
