Five people hoping to become a firefighter or paramedic with the New York City Fire Department have been arrested for submitting fake degrees from an online university, city investigators said today.

A sixth person was arrested for submitting documents from the same Internet institution, Belford University, for a clerical position with the fire department.

The arrests came during an ongoing undercover investigation into phony educational documents by the Department of Investigation.

To earn an aerospace engineering degree from Belford University, an undercover investigator simply had to pay $509.15 and state his “luv” for “planes and rockets,” as he did on an application in which he purposely misidentified himself as a 12-year-old, investigators said.

Despite his age, and difficulty spelling, he received a degree in the mail in 15 days after applying online. The only work he had to do was to take a quiz, which he failed at first, but passed on his second try after he was able to get the answers from the university’s Web site, according to investigators.

For a few dollars extra, investigators said the undercover investigator could have graduated summa cum laude.

The Department of Investigation has no plans to pursue charges against the university, which investigators said is not a legitimately accredited institution.

“The focus was on the individuals who allegedly submitted the phony degrees,” a spokeswoman, Diane Struzzi, said.

The individuals arrested including Samuel Miller-Vaughn, 25, of Manhattan; Mayra Jimenez, 28, of Brooklyn; Tyesha McGriff, 29, and Shaquanna Moye, 29, of the Bronx; Nicholas Messina, 23, of Copiague; Martin Burch, 33, of Lawrenceville. They face charges of falsifying business records and offering a false instrument for filing.
