PHOENIX — The family of Carol Anne Gotbaum, who died in police custody at a Phoenix airport in September, has filed a claim against the city of Phoenix, the first step in filing a wrongful death suit.
Attorneys for the Gotbaum family did not provide a copy of the claim, but the Arizona Republic reported on its Web site that it seeks $8 million.
The claim was rejected by Phoenix city officials in a letter to Gotbaum family lawyers. Carol Anne Gotbaum died September 28 in a police holding cell at the airport after being arrested for disorderly conduct.
Carol Anne Gotbaum, the daughter-in-law of city Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, was on her way from New York to enter an alcohol treatment center in Tucson.
