Seagrams heir Edgar Bronfman, 77, resigned yesterday as president of the World Jewish Congress, an organization that has fought for restitution on behalf of Jewish Nazi victims. Its governing board will meet in New York next month to elect Mr. Bronfman’s successor. His resignation, after more than 25 years, comes less than a week after an internal memorandum that presented plans for Mr. Bronfman’s son to take over the organization was leaked to the press. While Matthew Bronfman has been named a possible successor to his father, the president of the Congress’s European branch, Pierre Besnainou, said he would support the candidacy of the group’s executive chairman, Mendel Kaplan of South Africa. New York philanthropist Ronald Lauder is also said to be a contender.
