A New York City police officer could face seven years in jail for allegedly fleeing the scene of an accident and then lying in court to cover it up.
The officer, Catherine Johnson-Murphy, a 10-year veteran of the NYPD, allegedly hit another driver on the Southern State Parkway near Valley Stream in 2001 and then kept going, according to the Nassau County district attorney, Kathleen Rice.
After the driver of the second car caught up to her, Ms. Johnson-Murphy allegedly lied about who she was. The State Police tracked down Ms. Johnson-Murphy, 47, using her license plate number, and she was called to appear at a Department of Motor Vehicles hearing three years after the accident. The district attorney’s office has accused her of lying again at that hearing, where she claimed her car had been at the repair shop on the day of the accident
