Police are searching for the family of a 6-month-old baby who was abandoned yesterday in a livery car in Queens, police said.
The baby, nicknamed Lourdes by the medical staff that cared for her at St. John’s Hospital in Queens, was deserted in the back of the cab by an unidentified man at about 9:45 a.m., police said.
The man told the driver, Klever Sailema, to pull over at the corner of 86th Street and Northern Boulevard in the Corona section of Queens so he could make a phone call, police said. Mr. Sailema told police that after the suspect crossed the street, he lost sight of him in passing traffic.
When it became apparent to Mr. Sailema that the suspect wasn’t returning, he took the baby to a local firehouse, Engine 239, police said. The baby was later transported to St. John’s Hospital, police said.
The baby will be in the care of the Administration of Children’s Services until her family is located.
