A 77-year-old man was critically injured on Broadway near Canal Street yesterday morning when a police car struck him, police said. The man was thrown onto the car, shattering the windshield, an eyewitness said. The man, who was not identified, was crossing Broadway to his souvenir shop and did not check for oncoming traffic, the witness said.

Police said the patrol car was traveling slowly and did not have its sirens or lights on.

The man was rushed to St. Vincent’s Hospital in critical condition, police said. The driver of the police car has been on the force for several years, police said.
