A man was shot dead during a struggle with police last night inside a Bronx apartment building, police said. The man was not immediately identified last night.

Police said four uniformed officers, including a police sergeant, were on patrol near Walton Avenue and East 176th Street in Morris Heights yesterday afternoon when they encountered a group of men huddled together, looking at something. As the officers approached to investigate further, the men fled in different directions.

Police pursued one suspect into an apartment building on Walton Avenue, where they struggled to subdue him, police said. Officers did not say what prompted the shooting, but police said the suspect was struck and taken to Lincoln Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A .9-millimeter gun was recovered from the scene.
