Mayor Bloomberg made a brief introduction at a fund-raising event for Attorney General Cuomo last night at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
“Lately the pollsters have been wrong, the football experts have been wrong, the weather forecasters have been wrong, but tonight this is one crowd that has it absolutely right,” the Republican turned independent mayor said, according to a person who was present during the remarks. “It’s been one great year as attorney general, and one that deserves to lead to many, many more.”
Mr. Bloomberg called Mr. Cuomo the “people’s lawyer” and praised his work on gun control, Medicaid fraud, student loans, and the environment.
About 100 people were on hand for the event, which was closed to the press.
The mayor also joked that Mr. Cuomo’s only misstep was not to become a billionaire before entering politics, two participants who were leaving the event told The New York Sun.
Beyond Mr. Bloomberg’s recent history as a Republican, it appeared to be an unusual cameo for the mayor. New York press outlets have speculated that both Mr. Bloomberg and Mr. Cuomo, Democrat, could emerge as candidates to run against Governor Spitzer when his term ends, in 2010.
