The New York Philharmonic has chosen 40-year-old Alan Gilbert as its newest musical director, the New York Times reported on its Web site. Mr. Gilbert is the son of two former Philharmonic violinists and is the first native New Yorker to hold the position. Mr. Gilbert, who made his debut with the Philharmonic in 2001, will conduct 12 weeks of Philharmonic concerts every year for the next five years. He will replace the current musical director, Lorin Maazel, in 2009. Officials from the Philharmonic also announced that they will appoint Riccardo Muti to a role similar to a principal guest conductor, the Times reported. Mr. Muti is expected to spend six to eight weeks a year with the Philharmonic.
