Bernice Leber has begun her term as president of the New York State Bar Association. Ms. Leber, who was elected last year by the association’s house of delegates, is the association’s 111th president, and the second consecutive woman to hold the office. She succeeds Kathryn Grant Madigan, of Levene Gouldin & Thompson LLP.
Ms. Leber, who is a partner in the firm Arent Fox LLP, has practiced as a trial lawyer for more than 28 years and is a former parliamentarian to the New York State Senate.
Ms. Leber said in a press release that her priorities will include creating a task force to reduce wrongful convictions, protecting intellectual privacy rights for lawyers, studying ways to make courthouses more user-friendly, and making law practice more cost-efficient for individuals and small firms. In addition, she wants to explore ways that New Yorkers can work to lessen climate change.
The New York State Bar Association is the largest voluntary state bar in America, with 74,000 members.
