NEW YORK (AP) – An off-duty police officer was arrested on a murder charge Friday after he shot and killed a woman with whom he had a relationship, police said.
Officer Harry Rupnarine shot the victim, Guyatree Harpati, as the two quarreled around 7:30 p.m. Thursday near Atlantic Avenue and 82nd Street in Queens, according to police. Harpati had called her father on a cell phone, and he heard part of the argument before the phone went dead, police said.
Harpati, 22, of Brooklyn, died at the scene, police said.
Officer Rupnarine complained of chest pains and was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center before his arrest, police said.
Officer Rupnarine joined the NYPD in January 2005 and is assigned to a transit task force in Brooklyn, police said.
Police said they did not know whether he was represented by a lawyer. A message left with the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association’s answering service was not immediately returned early Friday.
Police did not release Officer Rupnarine’s address, and no telephone number for him was listed in the New York metropolitan area.
