An off-duty rookie police officer accidentally shot and killed his friend during a card game at Bay Ridge, police said.
The police officer, Javier Colon, 25, joined the department one-and-a-half years ago. He was cleaning his 9mm police-issue semiautomatic inside a friend’s house when it went off at 8:34 p.m. A round hit his friend, George Perez, in the face, police said.
Perez, 25, of West New York, N.J., was rushed to Victory Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:01 p.m. Wednesday, about half an hour after the shooting.
A neighbor told television reporters that the officer “looked like he was really distraught. It was so bad that he fell in the street running down the stairs looking for help for his best friend.”
The officer has not been charged, police said.
ARREST IN COLD – CASE
AT RAPPER’S CLUB
Cold-case detectives arrested the former bodyguard of rapper Fat Joe, who allegedly killed a teenager 10 years ago at a Bronx social club owned by the rapper.
Jose Mulero, 38, of the Bronx, was being held at the Federal Corrections Institute at McKean, Pa., on a 1999 gun charge, when he was arrested for the April 15, 1994, killing.
Mulero is accused of firing a 9mm handgun at two groups of disputing revelers outside The Buda Spot, an illegal social club on East 160th Street, police said.
One of the bullets hit Ernesto Reyes, 17, in the head and killed him, police said. Mulero allegedly shot into the crowd because he believed Fat Joe, whose real name is Joe Cartagena, was being threatened.
Mulero then dragged the body to a nearby lot, police said.
According to a law enforcement source, the club was owned by Mr. Cartagena.
Cold case detectives re-opened the case last year.
Mr. Cartagena is considered a witness, but is not considered a suspect at this time, police said.
CONTRACTOR CHARGED
IN QUEENS BRIBERY
A contractor from Brooklyn was charged with bribery in an attempt to inflate the construction costs of a state funded Queens day care facility.
Mohammed Kabir, 41, of Brooklyn, is accused of giving an $11,000 payoff to the project manager of a day care facility under construction at York College at Jamaica, according to Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.
Mr. Kabir owns JBC Contracting Company, a Brooklyn firm.
In offering the bribe, Mr. Kabir attempted to inflate the cost of the project by $300,000 and promised the manager a kickback of an additional $37,000, according to the district attorney’s office.
Also, Mr. Kabir allegedly intended to have shoddy workmanship downplayed.
On July 6, Mr. Kabir allegedly told the manager that “it was time to make some money” and displayed a large roll of cash.
The manager told the defendant he would get back to him and then notified the State Dormitory Authority, according to the district attorney’s office.
Mr. Kabir was arraigned on September 15 in Queens Criminal Court before Judge Pauline Mullings, who set bail of $25,000 and a return date of September 29.
