A man contemplating a suicide leap from the fifth floor of a Manhattan hotel decided against jumping after a police officer intervened, police officials said.

Responding to the scene at the New York Inn Hotel at 765 Eighth Ave., the officer ascended to the man, whom he recognized as a local resident, and started a conversation.

The man surrendered to police custody and was transported to Bellevue Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, police said.
