NEW YORK (AP) – Two police officers have been suspended after they failed to adequately investigate a 15-year-old girl’s complaint that a man attempted to abduct her – only hours before the same man raped another teenager, the police said.
Police did not identify the two officers who are assigned to the 101st Precinct in Queens. Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne said that the officers’ actions are being investigated and that they could face disciplinary actions.
Eric McCoy was arrested on Jan. 3 and charged with committing two rapes in Queens, police said. In each case, police said he posed as a police officer to lure his victims to motel rooms, where he raped them. The first attack allegedly took place Dec. 4 against a 27-year-old woman, while the second attack, against a 17-year-old, was on Jan. 2.
Hours before the second rape, McCoy had approached the 15-year-old girl, identifying himself as a police officer and telling her to wait for him at a laundry, police said. While there, the girl recounted the episode to another woman, who called 911.
When the two officers from the 101st Precinct arrived, McCoy told them that there was a fight between two girls, police said. They questioned the girl through the open window of their squad car about a possible fight, then drove her to a subway station and told her to go to school.
They did not question McCoy or anyone else at the scene.
