69 ARRESTED IN BROOKLYN DRUG OPERATION
The Kings County District Attorney’s Office announced yesterday the indictment of 69 people for the operation of an $11-million-a-year drug-trafficking operation that it said controlled three housing projects in Brooklyn.
According to the DA’s office, the investigation, called “Operation Family Affair,” was started in February 2003 by the Major Narcotics Investigation Bureau of the Kings County DA’s office and the Brooklyn North Narcotics division of the NYPD. It showed that the massive drug-trafficking operation was a collaboration between five smaller organizations that controlled three housing developments consisting of 34 apartment buildings. The groups were held together, and to each other, by family relationships.
Investigators discovered that the group used juveniles as lookouts, runners, and to scare up business for their dealers, who sold crack cocaine and heroin, to insulate the higher-ups from arrest or prosecution, the DA’s office said. According to the DA’s office, the five groups were led by Johnny Collado, Andre Coulter, and Victor Adams, plus two other leaders whose identities were not released because their indictments are sealed.
A total of 13 search warrants were executed, and $50,000 in cash, seven luxury cars, and a boat, a 35-foot Mainship express cruiser, were seized as either evidence against or the proceeds of the drug ring, the DA’s office said.
Sixty-five of the 69 defendants have been charged with conspiracy in the first degree. The four remaining defendants, who are juvenile offenders, were charged with conspiracy in the second degree.
