The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s board of commissioners approved the construction of the Freedom Tower yesterday.
The move comes two days after Governor Spitzer gave his support for the $2.9 billion project, dashing the hopes of critics that the new administration would alter the plan.
The vote by the agency clears the way for nearly $500 million in construction and service contracts for the project, which is set for completion in 2012.
Government tenants are being lined up for about half of the 2.6 million square feet of office space in the tower, the agency has said.
