NEW PALTZ — Keith Strudler, a 36-year-old professor at Marist College, came in first yesterday at the Survival of the Shawangunks triathlon with a time of 04:28:02. Philip Vondra, 39, of New York City, came in second with a time of 04:42:19. Among the women, Katherine Cimonettia, a 32-year-old paralegal from Bayville, placed first with a time of 05:02:09. Julie Denny, 40, of New Paltz, came in second with a time of 05:04:07.
Founded the unorthodox triathlon in 1983, the Survival of the Shawangunks, racers start out cycling 30 miles on winding country roads, then alternate running on cinder carriage trails and swimming across three mountain lakes, covering 18.7 miles while on land and 2.1 miles in the water. The route gains and loses thousands of feet in elevation and treats competitors to a series of vistas.
