A 20-year-old man who was shot in his legs by his neighbor — an off-duty police sergeant — after he threatened the policeman with a metal pipe was charged with attempted assault, prosecutors said yesterday.

Talwinder Singh, of Queens, went to the home of Sargeant Quillian Virgil on Friday evening and began punching, kicking and swinging a metal pipe at his front door, prosecutors said. The policeman confronted Mr. Singh and eventually shot him two times, once in each leg.

Mr. Singh was taken to a hospital and was released Tuesday. He was charged with attempted burglary, attempted assault and criminal mischief, prosecutors said.
