A ceremony on the Upper East Side today marked a revival for the neighborhood’s police precinct.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly rededicated the 17th Precinct station house, which is headquarters for police who patrol the Upper East Side, after the completion of a $4.5 million reconstruction project that began in March 2006.
“The men and women of the 17th Precinct have succeeded in making this neighborhood among the city’s most desirable palaces to live and work,” Mr. Kelly said. “Their dedication has driven down crime 35% over the past six years and they now have a station house that reflects the area’s vitality.”
The multi-million dollar project included the installation of advanced computer and technology systems. It also included the construction of a new main desk, a muster room where officers meet for roll call, and an arrest-processing center.
The station house was also refitted with new plumbing, central air conditioning, electrical systems, flooring, and lighting.
