Police are searching for two burglars who robbed the business of a retired correction officer in the Maspeth section of Queens.
At least one of the men may have been shot during the robbery at the retired officer’s check-cashing store at 58-02 Borden Ave.
According to officials, the officer, John Sergio, 59, was manning the counter of a Western Union store when two men entered at 8:18 a.m. The men were armed, according to Mr. Sergio’s account, and he said he gave them the money they requested. Police would not disclose how much was given.
Police said Mr. Sergio then fired five rounds from his revolver, possibly hitting one of the men, who fled in a maroon-colored vehicle.
Mr. Sergio worked as a correction officer for 19 years and retired in 1996, according to Department of Correction officials.
