Homeland security officials defended their ability to protect the nation’s borders after Senator Schumer questioned how a man with drug-resistant tuberculosis crossed into New York from Canada with a flagged passport.
The patient was identified as 31-year-old Andrew Speaker, an attorney in Atlanta. Mr. Speaker flew to Greece and Canada against the recommendations of the CDC, possibly infecting fellow passengers, before driving from Montreal to New York City on May 25.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesman, Russ Knocke, yesterday accused Mr. Schumer of making “political hay” out of the incident.
