In anticipation of an uphill battle for a new funding formula that would channel billions of extra dollars to needy school districts, education advocates are joining with Governor Spitzer to pressure the Legislature to support his budget proposal.

After meeting with the governor in Albany yesterday, leaders of the Campaign for Fiscal Equity, which sued the state government to increase funding for New York City schools, and the Alliance for Quality Education addressed their plea for support to potential opponents in the Republican-controlled Senate, who have voiced concern that their districts could lose money under the new system.

The previous school aid system unofficially prevented any district from losing school aid from year to year.
