Mayor Bloomberg is expected to announce this morning that a new school will be built in Lower Manhattan.
The school construction project was being held hostage by the Bloomberg administration as a way to pressure the speaker of the state Assembly, Sheldon Silver, to cooperate on plans for the proposed Jets football stadium at the far West Side of Manhattan, the New York Times reported last month. The stadium, officially called the New York Sports and Convention Center, would be the principal venue for the 2012 Olympics if New York is selected this summer as the host city.
Mr. Bloomberg’s announcement, before the state government has approved the stadium project, calls into question whether the school was being used as a bargaining chip in connection with the stadium.
