Senator Schumer, a mentor of Rep. Anthony Weiner, parted ways with his protege yesterday over the mayoral candidate’s criticism of Mayor Bloomberg.
Mr. Weiner has often faulted Mr. Bloomberg for being insufficiently forceful in lobbying for the city with Republicans in Washington and Albany, particularly on the issue of federal funds for security. The matter came to a head this week when it was reported that security concerns surrounding redevelopment at the site of the World Trade Center remain unresolved. Mr. Weiner has said the mayor’s “single-minded obsession” with the West Side stadium project came at the expense of the redevelopment of Lower Manhattan.
At a Crain’s breakfast yesterday, however, Mr. Schumer, asked about Mr. Weiner’s assertions, said he disagreed with his former aide and fellow Democrat.
“Mayor Bloomberg has worked hard for the city and has made every phone call I asked him to,” Mr. Schumer said.
Speaking at Cardozo Law School yesterday, Mr. Weiner reacted to his mentor’s reproof by saying Mr. Schumer was “generous” in his characterization of the mayor. The congressman added that Mr. Bloomberg’s inability to exact concessions from Governor Pataki and President Bush spoke for itself.
