New York City’s federal prisons are dangerously overcrowded and understaffed, a new report released yesterday by Senator Schumer says.

The report showed that the city’s two federal prisons, one in Brooklyn and the other in Manhattan, are both more than 50% over capacity.

“We cannot treat these critical prisons like an afterthought,” Mr. Schumer said. “These facilities house the worst of the worst and cannot be bursting at the seams with not enough staff to maintain order and safety.”

The report also found that as of March 1, there were 78 vacant positions at the Brooklyn prison and 39 in Manhattan.

Mr. Schumer called New York’s federal prisons some of the worst in the country.
