Police have arrested two teenagers in the robbery of a teenager in Crown Heights last week that has prompted politicians and police to flood the area over fears of rising racial tensions.
The victim, who is Jewish, was attacked while riding his bicycle through the neighborhood last Friday and robbed of his bicycle and cell phone. Witnesses reported seeing two black men fleeing the scene.
The incident came on the heels of another assault a month earlier in which a group of Jewish teenagers attacked a black college student. The attackers in that incident have not been caught.
A group of elected officials held a news conference yesterday to call for calm in the neighborhood where riots once broke out between the Jewish and black communities, but residents have said the fears of rising tensions are unfounded.
Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday he had met with leaders from the area this week.
“I can tell you this city is very different than the days of old when Crown Heights was a flash point,” he said. “I think you will see everybody cooperating.”
