RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) – Two New York City Police Department officers were in a New Jersey jail on Saturday, the morning after being arrested in connection with what authorities said was a narcotics trafficking operation.
The two off-duty officers initially said they were undercover officers on assignment when police pulled them over in Rutherford, but when burglary tools were found in their vehicle, they were taken in for questioning, police told WNBC NewsChannel 4 in New York.
Police soon discovered a possible connection to a drug-robbery.
The officers, whose names were not immediately released, were transferred from Rutherford police custody to the Bergen County jail on Saturday morning, police told the news station.
They were likely to face felony drug and conspiracy charges, according to WNBC.
The NYPD wouldn’t immediately discuss the case on Saturday, except to say the department had internal affairs officers investigating.
Both officers had been on the force for about two years, with one working in Manhattan and the other in Brooklyn, according to WNBC.
The Bergen County prosecutor did not immediately return an Associated Press call for comment on Saturday.
