The head of the Transport Workers Union Local 100 plans to call for a second vote on the contract that transit workers rejected by a razor-thin margin in January.
The TWU president, Roger Toussaint, said in a statement yesterday that he would convene an executive board meeting later this week to press for a revote.
“We believe that with the confusion and the misinformation about the contract cleared up, Local 100 members will strongly vote the contract up,” Mr. Toussaint said. “This was a good, strong contract then as it is now, and it deserves our support.”
Following a three-day strike in December, dissidents within the union campaigned vigorously against the agreement, leading to a defeat by seven votes. In a meeting with mediators yesterday, Mr. Toussaint made a final effort to avoid binding arbitration, which the union has long opposed.
