Mayor Bloomberg says he plans to veto a City Council bill banning the use of metal bats in high school baseball games on safety grounds.

“I don’t know whether aluminum bats are more dangerous or less dangerous,” Mr. Bloomberg said yesterday. “But I don’t think that it’s the city’s business to regulate that.”

The bill’s leading sponsor, James Oddo of Staten Island, said he has more than enough votes to override the veto. Supporters of the bill argue that metal bats hit baseballs faster than do wooden bats.
